About this website

Climate-and-freshwater.info is a product of Euro-Limpacs, a major EU-funded Integrated Project (EU Contract number GOCE-CT-2003-505540). Euro-Limpacs investigates the effects of Climate Change on rivers, lakes and wetlands, through increased temperature, altered hydrology and the interactions with other stressors.

Climate change initiates chains of processes in aquatic ecosystems which are complex and difficult to detect. Simple indicators are required to judge how advanced these processes already are. Existing indicator systems have primarily been designed to monitor the effects of land-use and pollution and are not specifically designed to address Climate Change effects.

It is an aim of Euro-Limpacs to define indicators for Climate Change effects on freshwater ecosystems. That’s what this website is about.

Climate-and-freshwater.info is based on both, Euro-Limpacs results and on a literature review. For broadly defined ecosystem types it defines:

  • Presently used assessment systems
  • Case studies addressing the effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems
  • Indicators potentially suited to detect the effects of climate change
  • Aquatic species which are affected by (or benefiting from) climate change
